Source Fashion, hailed as Europe’s leading responsible sourcing event, kicked off on July 8th at the iconic Olympia London, drawing an unprecedented number of attendees. This year’s attendance highlights a growing interest in sustainable and ethical practices as industry leaders, innovative designers, and sustainability advocates converge to discover the latest trends and forge valuable connections.

The rise of “disposable fashion” has notably transformed the clothing industry, and this event showcased a vibrant tapestry of collaborative partnerships aimed at challenging the norms of fast fashion. A collective initiative that not only underscores innovation but also rekindles a sense of purpose within the fashion industry.  – Networking Magazine

RETAIL LANDSCAPE

A diverse array of buyers, retailers, and sourcing professionals gathered to promote an atmosphere oozing with enthusiasm and collaboration. Key representatives from industry leaders such as John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, All Saints, and River Island participated, all of whom are committed to driving significant change and engaging younger generations. Their collective vision emphasises innovation and inclusivity, paving the way for a forward-thinking retail landscape.

Lineup

This year’s showcase features an exceptional lineup of 250 responsible manufacturers from over 22 key sourcing regions, including the UK, Portugal, Morocco, and India, among others.

Suzanne Ellingham, Event Director of Source Fashion, remarked, “The energy on the show floor today is incredible. The show welcomed a record number of visitors, ranging from independent retailers to global brands, all eager to explore new and responsible business practices. This event transcends traditional sourcing; it’s a platform for meaningful conversations, innovation, and collaboration. The enthusiasm surrounding our content program and the Source Catwalk and Source Debates stages reflects the industry’s hunger for transparency and change”.

Source Fashion – Catwalk Show

The Source Catwalk Show captivated audiences with stunning collections from various designers, spotlighting three key trends: Electric Nature, Retro Richness, and Creative Joy, each capturing the spirit of the season. Headline partner Reskinned showcased an impressive range of pre-loved pieces, reinforcing the message that resale, reuse, and repurposing can be stylish and chic.

The Source Catwalk and Source Debates stages featured engaging panels that sparked authentic dialogues within the industry. Discussions addressed pressing issues and explored opportunities for substantial change, including whether consumers are genuinely willing to pay more for ethically produced fashion. The panel, moderated by Anna Berry of Retail 100 Consulting, emphasised the importance of transparency and storytelling in an evolving market, underscoring that genuine change depends on collaboration and trust.

Challenging The Conventional

In another notable session, industry leaders explored the concept of a post-growth business model, challenging the conventional profit-driven approach based on volume. The panel, featuring experts from various fashion sectors, advocated for strategies that prioritise fewer, high-quality products, emphasising brand loyalty and circular relationships between consumers and brands.

Linda Peddie, COO & CIO of New Look, shared insights on navigating the complexities of retail, emphasising the necessity of aligned legislation and industry-wide collaboration to drive sustainability. She noted, “You have to make the whole system work,” reinforcing the call for fresh perspectives within the industry.

Source Fashion – The Buzz

The buzz surrounding the event was palpable, with exhibitors praising the energy and calibre of discussions taking place. Aude Priya Wacziarg, Director at Francis Wacziarg Group, expressed enthusiasm about the diverse exhibitors and the event’s atmosphere. This fashion show holds a special place in my heart as it signifies the first official event under the Saventures brand—an entirely self-funded endeavour. The event proudly featured five dynamic fashion brands from London and Paris, each bringing their distinct story, aesthetic, and creative voice to the runway.

    Passionate

An idea, in its essence, can often be likened to a dream—an elusive flicker of possibility, shimmering like a candle’s flame, waiting for the right moment to blaze into reality. Yet, for many, that spark is often shrouded by the murky shadows of fear, the weight of financial constraints, and the daunting uncertainty that looms over the journey ahead. These formidable challenges can deter even the most passionate and driven individuals from realising their entrepreneurial aspirations, particularly in a fiercely competitive fashion industry.

However, the narrative woven around the fashion world frequently emphasises the importance of seizing opportunities as they arise. What if, instead, you could take the bold step to become the architect of those opportunities? This profound realisation struck me when I had the privilege of meeting Savana.

    Savana Alcindor – Fashion Show

At just twenty-two years old, Savana manifested a vibrant fashion show that brought together a diverse ensemble of designers under one roof, a tapestry of creativity and artistry. The event unfolded within the charming St. John’s Church community hall in Harrow, Middlesex—a quaint venue that provided an intimate and inviting backdrop for the evening’s festivities.

As I stepped through the welcoming doors, I was instantly swept up in an atmosphere buzzing with creativity and excitement, a palpable energy that hummed in the air. The clinking of glasses filled with carefully curated drinks, the aroma of delectable culinary offerings wafting from the catered spread, and the lively music that danced in the air set the perfect tone for the celebration, each element a testament to Savana’s vision and unwavering commitment.

    Venue

As I wandered through the venue, it became clear that the staff embodied an infectious passion. The warm and cheerful smiles of the attendants at the entrance, the diligent centre management, and the uniformed caterers all worked harmoniously to ensure that every detail was executed to perfection, creating an ambience rich in professionalism and enthusiasm.

“Savana exuded a captivating blend of pride, passion, and persistent focus, each quality illuminating her path as she pursued her vision”.

    -Networking Magazine

Blue lanyards adorned the necks of photographers and videographers, their focused gazes and poised cameras ready to capture the very essence of the evening. Their presence infused the gathering with a sense of urgency as they moved gracefully through the room, marking their territory.

What resonated with me the most was the striking diversity among the models who graced the runway, each one a reflection of our society’s rich tapestry. Together, they showcased the beauty of inclusivity and representation, an inspiring visual narrative that celebrated uniqueness. With over 100 guests in attendance, the venue thrived with an intimate vibrancy—a perfect setting for this celebration of fashion and creativity.

    Savana Alcindor – Visionary

As the night unfolded, it became increasingly evident that Savana was not merely an event organiser; she was a visionary—an architect of doors that welcomed others into the domain of possibility. Her passion and tireless dedication radiated through every aspect of the show, leaving a memorable mark on all who were fortunate enough to attend.

In a world where fear and uncertainty frequently stifle ambition, Savana’s incredible journey reminds us that with vision, drive, and the audacity to forge one’s own path, dreams can indeed flourish and transform into reality.

“At Saventures, we celebrate the essence of creativity, innovation, and community. This fashion show was not just an event but a vibrant beginning for everyone involved. I am proud and excited to have brought this vision to life and share this meaningful journey with a community of inspiring individuals”.

There was a story here that combined apparel, accessories, art, tattoo artists, tarot readers, body piercing specialists and suppliers. Viewing the various stands gives you a true sense of the industry scale.

    HISTORY

The ExCeL Centre, short for Exhibition Centre London, is an international exhibition and conference centre in the Royal Docks area of London, England. It was opened in November 2000 and has since become one of the largest and most important event venues in the United Kingdom.

The history of the ExCeL Centre began with the decision to regenerate the former Royal Victoria Dock, which had fallen into disuse since the 1980s. The idea was to create a state-of-the-art exhibition and conference facility to attract large-scale events and revitalise the area.

    CONSTRUCTION

Construction of the ExCeL Centre began in 1998 and was completed within two years at £400 million. The centre was designed by award-winning architect Sir Terry Farrell and covers a total area of 100 acres. It comprises of interconnected exhibition halls, conference facilities, meeting rooms, and event spaces.

The ExCeL Centre officially opened its doors on November 27, 2000. Its first major event was the annual London International Boat Show, which attracted thousands of visitors. Since then, the venue has hosted a wide range of international exhibitions, conferences, trade shows, concerts, sporting events, and cultural gatherings.

In 2012, the ExCeL Centre gained significant attention as it became one of London’s leading venues for the Summer Olympics and Paralympics. It hosted several sporting events, including boxing, fencing, table tennis, taekwondo, and wrestling.

    TIME

Over the years, the ExCeL Centre has continued to grow and evolve. It has expanded its facilities, adding a dedicated international convention centre called ICC London ExCeL. Today, it is a world-class venue that attracts millions of visitors and hosts numerous high-profile events yearly.

    WHY AN EXHIBITION?

The point of a tattoo exhibition is to celebrate tattoos’ artistry, creativity, and cultural significance. It provides a platform for talented tattoo artists to showcase their skills, unique styles, and innovative techniques. It allows individuals to appreciate the diverse forms of self-expression and personal stories that tattoos can convey. Moreover, a tattoo exhibition fosters a sense of community, bringing together enthusiasts, artists, and collectors to connect, learn, and appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship behind this ancient art form.

In the realm of art, there are countless mediums through which individuals express their deepest emotions, beliefs, and stories. Among these, the captivating world of tattoos is a mesmerising testament to the power of visual artistry. Today, we delve into the realm of a remarkable tattoo exhibition, where the boundaries between body and canvas blur, leaving us awestruck by tattoo artists’ skill, creativity, and boundless imagination.

Tattoo – A Canvas Beyond the Skin

Traditionally, tattoos were seen as symbols of rebellion or tribal affiliation, but their significance has evolved dramatically. The Tattoo Exhibition, held at the ExCel, celebrates the transformative power of this art form, elevating it to an undeniable form of self-expression and personal storytelling. The human body once considered a mere vessel, is now transformed into a living, breathing masterpiece – a canvas that embodies the essence of humanity’s diverse narratives.

    A Tapestry of Diversity

As one delves into the depths of the Tattoo Exhibition, it becomes evident that this art form transcends borders, cultures, and generations. From the intricate tribal patterns of Polynesia to the delicate floral motifs that grace the skin of individuals from every corner of the globe, the exhibition showcases a rich tapestry of artistic diversity. Each tattoo tells a unique story, unravelled through symbolic imagery, vivid colours, and meticulous details.

    Masterpieces in Motion

At the Big London Tattoo Exhibition, one is left in awe of the sheer talent and craftsmanship displayed by the tattoo artists. Their skilled hands transform the human body into a living masterpiece, combining technical precision with artistic vision. The exhibition showcases finished tattoos and allows visitors to witness the magic unfold in real time as artists create stunning works of art right before their eyes. This interactive experience bridges the gap between artist and admirer, forging connections that go beyond the art itself.

    Exploring the Meaning

While the Tattoo Exhibition undoubtedly dazzles with its visual brilliance, the stories behind the tattoos captivate the heart. The exhibition serves as a platform for individuals to share their personal narratives, triumphs, and struggles. Each tattoo becomes a vessel for catharsis, healing, and empowerment as individuals wear their stories with pride and resilience. Within the exhibition’s walls, visitors are encouraged to delve into the depths of the art, engaging in conversations that foster empathy, understanding, and a celebration of the human experience.

    A Celebration of Artistic Freedom

The Tattoo Exhibition serves as a resounding affirmation of artistic freedom and the power of self-expression. It challenges societal norms and preconceived notions, embracing the beauty found in the unconventional. By showcasing the artistry and diversity of the tattoo world, the exhibition encourages visitors to embrace their uniqueness, fostering an environment that celebrates individuality and the freedom to create.

    Why do people get tattoos?

People get tattoos for a multitude of reasons, as each individual’s motivation can vary greatly. Here are some common reasons why people choose to get tattoos:

    Self-expression

Tattoos serve as a powerful form of self-expression, allowing individuals to showcase their personalities, beliefs, passions, and experiences visually and permanently. It’s a means of communicating who they are and what matters to them.

    Commemoration

Tattoos often hold deep sentimental value, commemorating significant events, milestones, or loved ones. It can be a way to honour the memory of someone special, mark a personal achievement, or celebrate a meaningful moment in their lives.

    Tattoo Symbolism and Meaning

Tattoos can be deeply symbolic, representing personal philosophies, cultural or religious affiliations, or even serving as reminders of values and aspirations. They often carry profound and personal meanings that resonate with the individual.

    Artistic Appreciation

Many people get tattoos simply because they appreciate tattoos’ artistry and aesthetic appeal. The intricate designs, colours, and creativity involved in tattooing can be seen as wearable art, allowing individuals to carry a piece of art with them at all times.

    Empowerment and Confidence

Tattoos can empower individuals, helping them reclaim ownership of their bodies and fostering a sense of confidence and self-acceptance. It can be a way to embrace one’s uniqueness and challenge societal norms and expectations.

    Healing and Closure

Some people choose to get tattoos as a part of their healing process, using the art form to overcome personal traumas emotional struggles, or to signify a fresh start. Tattoos can serve as a therapeutic outlet, providing a sense of closure and growth.

It is essential to note that motivations for getting tattoos are highly personal and can differ significantly from person to person. The decision to get a tattoo should always be well-considered and thoughtfully chosen, as tattoos are permanent expressions of oneself.

Why have tattoos become so popular?

In many societies, there has been a shift in attitudes towards tattoos. They are no longer perceived as solely associated with subcultures or rebellion. Tattoos have become more mainstream and widely accepted, leading to increased popularity. Celebrities, athletes, and public figures sporting tattoos have played a significant role in popularising them. Their visibility in the media and social platforms has made tattoos more fashionable and desirable among the general population.

The rise of social media has allowed people to showcase their tattoos to a broad audience. Platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok inspire and create a sense of community among tattoo enthusiasts. This exposure has fueled the popularity of tattoos.

    Tattoo Stigma

Over the years, advancements in tattooing techniques, equipment, and ink quality have made the process safer, more precise, and less painful. This has helped reduce the stigma around tattoos and made them more appealing to a broader audience. Tattoo artists today are highly skilled and can create intricate and detailed designs. This allows individuals to personalise their tattoos, making them unique and meaningful to their own lives. The ability to create bespoke designs has made tattoos more attractive to people seeking self-expression.

Like any other fashion trend, tattoos have their own trends and styles that come and go. Certain tattoo styles, such as watercolour, minimalistic, or geometric designs, have gained popularity recently, attracting more individuals to get inked. With the growing visibility of tattoos in society, people have become more aware of the cultural and historical significance across different cultures. This increased awareness, combined with greater acceptance, has contributed to the popularity of tattoos.

    Reasons For Getting A Tattoo

It’s important to remember that the reasons behind an individual’s decision to get a tattoo vary; not everyone follows trends or seeks popularity. Ultimately, the popularity of tattoos can be attributed to a combination of societal shifts, personal expression, and changing perceptions.

    What is freelance press?

Freelance press refers to individuals or organisations that provide freelance or independent press services. In journalism and media, freelance press typically involves independent journalists or writers who work on a contract basis for various media outlets, such as newspapers, magazines, websites, or television networks. These freelancers may pitch story ideas, conduct interviews, research, and write articles or reports, which are then submitted to the media organisations they work with.Freelance press allows journalists to have more flexibility in their work, as they can choose their assignments and have the freedom to work with multiple outlets. It also provides media organisations access to diverse talent and expertise without needing full-time staff. Freelance press can cover various topics, including news, features, opinion pieces, and specialised reporting.

    Social media

Tattooists are often highly talented individuals. Tattooing is a form of art that requires skill, creativity, precision, and a deep understanding of various techniques and styles. Tattooists must be able to translate their client’s visions and ideas into beautiful and meaningful designs that will be permanently inked onto their skin. They must also have a keen eye for detail and the ability to work with different skin types and textures. Additionally, tattooists often spend years honing their craft and continually improving their skills through practice and ongoing learning. Coal Drops Yard sets the scene for the launch of a charity art exhibition in London. Raising money for the homeless, I caught up with the organisers.

    Charity

Lights camera action, Coal Drops Yard, is the venue for a very unique charity fundraising event. The prequel takes place just a few doors down from unit 76. Joao Bosco, a time-served tattoo artist and a property client, created an idea that has rocked the charity landscape with a firm goal to eradicate homelessness.

BEHIND THE CANVAS - CHARITY ART EXHIBITION
    Photography by – Sanj Saigal

Firstly, it has to be said that Tattoos date back to Neolithic times. For readers unfamiliar with that time marker, that’s a time when mummified preserved skin displayed this ancient art form. Winding the clock that far back in history is relevant as this resilient form of expression fell in and out of love with decades past.

Social media platforms have propelled tattoo artists into stardom, with many held in the same limelight as celebrities. I can vouch for that myself bearing witness to their posts across the virtual landscape. As a result, tattoos are now considered a credible and acceptable form of mapping a personal and expressive story.

Society once shunned these artists, and their work only had negative connotations. Thankfully this didn’t last long, as celebrities endorsed designs and pushed them into the limelight.

Homelessness is a national problem in the UK, and it seems that age has no bearing. On a personal note, when I was contacted by one of the exhibitors, my smile spoke a thousand words as I wanted to get involved.

    Digital Magazine

    Coal Drops Yard

Kings Cross in London boasts a regeneration project that is now a pinnacle of perfection. The balance between housing and commercial properties can’t be rivalled. As I exited the station, there was an overwhelming feeling of excitement for an area that was once only a commuter hub.

BEHIND THE CANVAS - CHARITY ART EXHIBITION

    Charity Event

This sets the scene for an charity art exhibition perfectly, as it has similar tones that resonate with this story. The underdog rises above its problems, just like these unsung artists. Ironic that now, people boast about their work.

Approaching the site made me feel as if I was part of something. The tattoos that map my story somehow formed a connection with the room.

Each of the artworks on display told a story of expression, black and white, many with rich colour tones. Potential buyers circled them, curious to know the artist behind the canvass.

A new concept was born from the need to help the homeless, particularly the young age group of 16 to 21-year-olds. Not taking the limelight away from the other charities, this exhibition will run till the 27th of November, so if you’re scrolling your way through this between now and then, you still have time.

“Uniting global talent to showcase and celebrate this unique form of artistic expression, whilst also raising valuable funds for a very worthwhile cause – this has been such a refreshing and heartwarming project to work on.  The brainchild of Joao, it’s been a pleasure working with such a talented artist who’s as passionate about his own craft as he is about supporting others creatives – and crucially, those in need.

Zoë Allen, Founder of Artistic Statements

The appeal of this event is not just the relevance of what Land Aid stands for in terms of a charity but the sheer power of the artistic designs. In addition, the overwhelming sense of a collective tells a story of uniting for a common cause.

These highly skilled individuals dawn their art for all to see at this charity event. It’s worth a look in, even if you’re not a fan. I can’t guarantee that you won’t bid as your eyes move across the room. Just know that the proceeds are all donated to a worthy cause.

The Networking Magazine would like to thank all the Charity members and event organisers personally and would love to have them on our podcast show in the future.

    With thanks to:

    Zoë Allen from Artistic Statements

    Big London Tattoo Show

A tattoo show that symbolises unity from an elite community that places a value on creativity and design. A post-pandemic unique indoor event captures this art form and propels it back into the limelight.

    Me Vs. Me

A fascinating insight into the Big London Tattoo Show held at the ExCel London. Live tattoos, art, food, entertainment and vintage markets.

    Tattoo artists

When you speak to tattoo artists, one thing that strikes you is how humble they are. Each artist has a story to tell. I think that having spoken to so many of them, they all have one thing in common; expression. A want and need to display a visual representation of a life story.
Tattoos have changed over the decades, but their meaning is personal and profound. Celebrities from all genres and, most recently, from the social media landscape have propelled their popularity almost to a form of status.

I witnessed the artists’ hard work as I walked around the stands. Live tattoos seemed part of the ambience and captured the hearts and minds of the audience. There was no modesty withheld as models, and the public held nothing back. This made me release that tattoos and confidence have an underlying relationship.

    Related industries

Some of the limelight was shared with related industries such as clothing, ink suppliers, and artwork. They all seemed to revolve around the origins of this beautiful art form that was once taboo. Every stand had curious eyes prompting questions.

I listened in as there was laughter and banter, no obstacles that would prevent sales. This was an eye-opener as you realise there is so much more to this industry.

    Branding

Never underestimate the business behind the art. It’s big, and you get a sense of that from the quality of business cards, banners, posters and overhead monitors. These tools played to effect enhancing the individual artist’s brand awareness.

No expense was spared; newbies started during the Pandemic on platforms like Etsy. As a result, their business models grew online and now have a visual representation in the form of a pop-up store at this event.

    Age

As you walk around, you can’t help but notice that age has no bearing on the tattoo industry. The significance of ink hasn’t changed, and somehow there is a draw for the older generation to embrace more modern tattoos that perhaps in their day would have been shunned upon. I believe this has impacted the industry and helped make tattoos more acceptable in society.

    Influencer

My journey into this sector began with a by-chance meeting with an influencer who is far too modest to admit that she is. Angel Grace is a lettering specialist and is well known within the inner circle.

With just under 30k Instagram followers and a contributor to some of the graffiti in London, she always gives credit to her peers. As a result, she has won countless awards, some of which are the most prestigious in the industry.

A reputation that proceeds, your mesmerised watching her work.

I want to shout out to the food hall staff, security, entertainers and venue organisers. Everyone worked hard to ensure that the show was more of a memory than an event.
