HISTORY

The ExCeL Centre, short for Exhibition Centre London, is an international exhibition and conference centre in the Royal Docks area of London, England. It was opened in November 2000 and has since become one of the largest and most important event venues in the United Kingdom.

The history of the ExCeL Centre began with the decision to regenerate the former Royal Victoria Dock, which had fallen into disuse since the 1980s. The idea was to create a state-of-the-art exhibition and conference facility to attract large-scale events and revitalise the area.

CONSTRUCTION

Construction of the ExCeL Centre began in 1998 and was completed within two years at £400 million. The centre was designed by award-winning architect Sir Terry Farrell and covers a total area of 100 acres. It comprises of interconnected exhibition halls, conference facilities, meeting rooms, and event spaces.

The ExCeL Centre officially opened its doors on November 27, 2000. Its first major event was the annual London International Boat Show, which attracted thousands of visitors. Since then, the venue has hosted a wide range of international exhibitions, conferences, trade shows, concerts, sporting events, and cultural gatherings.

In 2012, the ExCeL Centre gained significant attention as it became one of London’s leading venues for the Summer Olympics and Paralympics. It hosted several sporting events, including boxing, fencing, table tennis, taekwondo, and wrestling.

TIME

Over the years, the ExCeL Centre has continued to grow and evolve. It has expanded its facilities, adding a dedicated international convention centre called ICC London ExCeL. Today, it is a world-class venue that attracts millions of visitors and hosts numerous high-profile events yearly.

WHY AN EXHIBITION?

The point of a tattoo exhibition is to celebrate tattoos’ artistry, creativity, and cultural significance. It provides a platform for talented tattoo artists to showcase their skills, unique styles, and innovative techniques. It allows individuals to appreciate the diverse forms of self-expression and personal stories that tattoos can convey. Moreover, a tattoo exhibition fosters a sense of community, bringing together enthusiasts, artists, and collectors to connect, learn, and appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship behind this ancient art form.

Today, we delve into the realm of a remarkable tattoo exhibition, where the boundaries between body and canvas blur, leaving us awestruck by tattoo artists’ skill, creativity, and boundless imagination.

Tattoo – A Canvas Beyond the Skin

Traditionally, tattoos were seen as symbols of rebellion or tribal affiliation, but their significance has evolved dramatically. The Tattoo Exhibition, held at the ExCel, celebrates the transformative power of this art form, elevating it to an undeniable form of self-expression and personal storytelling. The human body once considered a mere vessel, is now transformed into a living, breathing masterpiece – a canvas that embodies the essence of humanity’s diverse narratives.

A Tapestry of Diversity

As one delves into the depths of the Tattoo Exhibition, it becomes evident that this art form transcends borders, cultures, and generations. From the intricate tribal patterns of Polynesia to the delicate floral motifs that grace the skin of individuals from every corner of the globe, the exhibition showcases a rich tapestry of artistic diversity. Each tattoo tells a unique story, unravelled through symbolic imagery, vivid colours, and meticulous details.

Masterpieces in Motion

At the Big London Tattoo Exhibition, one is left in awe of the sheer talent and craftsmanship displayed by the tattoo artists. Their skilled hands transform the human body into a living masterpiece, combining technical precision with artistic vision. The exhibition showcases finished tattoos and allows visitors to witness the magic unfold in real time as artists create stunning works of art right before their eyes. This interactive experience bridges the gap between artist and admirer, forging connections that go beyond the art itself.

Exploring the Meaning

While the Tattoo Exhibition undoubtedly dazzles with its visual brilliance, the stories behind the tattoos captivate the heart. The exhibition serves as a platform for individuals to share their personal narratives, triumphs, and struggles. Each tattoo becomes a vessel for catharsis, healing, and empowerment as individuals wear their stories with pride and resilience. Within the exhibition’s walls, visitors are encouraged to delve into the depths of the art, engaging in conversations that foster empathy, understanding, and a celebration of the human experience.

A Celebration of Artistic Freedom

The Tattoo Exhibition serves as a resounding affirmation of artistic freedom and the power of self-expression. It challenges societal norms and preconceived notions, embracing the beauty found in the unconventional. By showcasing the artistry and diversity of the tattoo world, the exhibition encourages visitors to embrace their uniqueness, fostering an environment that celebrates individuality and the freedom to create.

Why do people get tattoos?

People get tattoos for a multitude of reasons, as each individual’s motivation can vary greatly. Here are some common reasons why people choose to get tattoos:

Self-expression

Tattoos serve as a powerful form of self-expression, allowing individuals to showcase their personalities, beliefs, passions, and experiences visually and permanently. It’s a means of communicating who they are and what matters to them.

Commemoration

Tattoos often hold deep sentimental value, commemorating significant events, milestones, or loved ones. It can be a way to honour the memory of someone special, mark a personal achievement, or celebrate a meaningful moment in their lives.

Tattoo Symbolism and Meaning

Tattoos can be deeply symbolic, representing personal philosophies, cultural or religious affiliations, or even serving as reminders of values and aspirations. They often carry profound and personal meanings that resonate with the individual.

Artistic Appreciation

Many people get tattoos simply because they appreciate tattoos’ artistry and aesthetic appeal. The intricate designs, colours, and creativity involved in tattooing can be seen as wearable art, allowing individuals to carry a piece of art with them at all times.

Empowerment and Confidence

Tattoos can empower individuals, helping them reclaim ownership of their bodies and fostering a sense of confidence and self-acceptance. It can be a way to embrace one’s uniqueness and challenge societal norms and expectations.

Healing and Closure

Some people choose to get tattoos as a part of their healing process, using the art form to overcome personal traumas emotional struggles, or to signify a fresh start. Tattoos can serve as a therapeutic outlet, providing a sense of closure and growth.

It is essential to note that motivations for getting tattoos are highly personal and can differ significantly from person to person. The decision to get a tattoo should always be well-considered and thoughtfully chosen, as tattoos are permanent expressions of oneself.

Why have tattoos become so popular?

In many societies, there has been a shift in attitudes towards tattoos. They are no longer perceived as solely associated with subcultures or rebellion. Tattoos have become more mainstream and widely accepted, leading to increased popularity. Celebrities, athletes, and public figures sporting tattoos have played a significant role in popularising them. Their visibility in the media and social platforms has made tattoos more fashionable and desirable among the general population.

The rise of social media has allowed people to showcase their tattoos to a broad audience. Platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and TikTok inspire and create a sense of community among tattoo enthusiasts. This exposure has fueled the popularity of tattoos.

Tattoo Stigma

Over the years, advancements in tattooing techniques, equipment, and ink quality have made the process safer, more precise, and less painful. This has helped reduce the stigma around tattoos and made them more appealing to a broader audience. Tattoo artists today are highly skilled and can create intricate and detailed designs. This allows individuals to personalise their tattoos, making them unique and meaningful to their own lives. The ability to create bespoke designs has made tattoos more attractive to people seeking self-expression.

Like any other fashion trend, tattoos have their own trends and styles that come and go. Certain tattoo styles, such as watercolour, minimalistic, or geometric designs, have gained popularity recently, attracting more individuals to get inked. With the growing visibility of tattoos in society, people have become more aware of the cultural and historical significance across different cultures. This increased awareness, combined with greater acceptance, has contributed to the popularity of tattoos.

Reasons For Getting A Tattoo

It’s important to remember that the reasons behind an individual’s decision to get a tattoo vary; not everyone follows trends or seeks popularity. Ultimately, the popularity of tattoos can be attributed to a combination of societal shifts, personal expression, and changing perceptions.

What is freelance press?

Freelance press refers to individuals or organisations that provide freelance or independent press services. In journalism and media, freelance press typically involves independent journalists or writers who work on a contract basis for various media outlets, such as newspapers, magazines, websites, or television networks. These freelancers may pitch story ideas, conduct interviews, research, and write articles or reports, which are then submitted to the media organisations they work with.Freelance press allows journalists to have more flexibility in their work, as they can choose their assignments and have the freedom to work with multiple outlets. It also provides media organisations access to diverse talent and expertise without needing full-time staff. Freelance press can cover various topics, including news, features, opinion pieces, and specialised reporting.

Social media

Tattooists are often highly talented individuals. Tattooing is a form of art that requires skill, creativity, precision, and a deep understanding of various techniques and styles. Tattooists must be able to translate their client’s visions and ideas into beautiful and meaningful designs that will be permanently inked onto their skin. They must also have a keen eye for detail and the ability to work with different skin types and textures. Additionally, tattooists often spend years honing their craft and continually improving their skills through practice and ongoing learning. Their talent lies in their ability to create stunning and unique tattoos that meet their client’s expectations and stand the test of time.

Graffiti has been a contentious topic for decades, with some viewing it as vandalism and others seeing it as a form of artistic expression. In this editorial, we’ll take a closer look at the debate surrounding graffiti and explore its impact on our cities and communities.

Graffiti has long been a topic of controversy in London, with some seeing it as an art form and others as a form of vandalism. While there are valid arguments on both sides, it is important to consider the impact that graffiti has on our city.

GRAFFITI

On one hand, graffiti can be seen as a way for artists to express themselves and add vibrancy to the city. When done tastefully and in areas where it is allowed, graffiti can enhance the urban landscape and add character to otherwise mundane structures. In some cases, graffiti can even serve as a form of social commentary, drawing attention to important issues and sparking conversations.

However, graffiti can also have negative consequences. When it is done illegally, it can be seen as a form of vandalism and can damage property, costing taxpayers money to clean up. It can also contribute to a sense of disorder and create a perception of neglect in certain areas.

LONDON VIBE

One way to strike a balance between these competing interests is to designate certain areas of the city as graffiti zones. These areas would be designated for artists to express themselves legally and without fear of punishment. This would not only allow for the city to showcase the talents of its artists, but also help to reduce illegal graffiti in other areas.

Another solution is to involve the community in the decision-making process around graffiti. By creating community-led initiatives to combat illegal graffiti, we can engage residents in maintaining their neighbourhoods and reduce the prevalence of illegal activity.

EXPRESSION

Ultimately, the key to addressing the issue of street art in London is finding a way to balance the interests of artists and the community. By creating designated areas for graffiti and involving the community in the decision-making process, we can find a way to promote artistic expression while also maintaining the integrity of our city.

It is important to remember that street art is not a black and white issue. While it can be seen as vandalism in some cases, it can also be a form of artistic expression. By finding a balance between these competing interests, we can ensure that London remains a vibrant and dynamic city while also respecting the rights of property owners and the community as a whole.

“Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable”.

A conversation with Pedro Macosta about his journey into the world of Cryptocurrency and how it was born from a Facebook group.

A Cryptocurrency that contributes towards charity.

Somewhat of a taboo, the concept of Cryptocurrencies is both topical and controversial. However, our global take as a society on a scenario where we all use a multitude of virtual currencies to buy goods and services up to this point is now questionable. The rise of Bitcoins popularity has impacted the world profoundly as we now see more and more retailers considering other payment methods.

Due diligence is always the order of the day. There are always two sides to the story; pardon the pun. On the one hand, there is an interest in something we don’t know much about. But, on the other hand, there is little media coverage to make an informed decision.

I managed to catch up with Pedro Macosta. We talk about his journey of cryptocurrency discovery, his take on expectations and how his creation of BUZABA is giving back to society in a unique way.

The beginning of my journey

How did it all begin?

Well, it started with covid 19 and the first lockdown. I was at home without a job and had nothing to do watching the same news repeatedly on how terrible the virus was, how it was spreading and the misery it was causing. I noted that the Pandemic had impacted stocks and shares. I’d been following the stock market since 1990 when I came to the UK and later was involved with the buying and selling of shares as a small investor.

I’ve witnessed a few crashes; the dot com bubble burst and later the 2008 financial crisis. I felt that now was the opportunity to buy low and hopefully make some good returns, so I started a Facebook stocks and shares group. The primary purpose was to share my personal experience of the stock market and my bought shares.

BUYING SHARES

These days you can buy shares with an app on your phone; however, in the early ’90s, when I started dipping my toes in the stock market, I had to go to a phone box and call a moody broker who would make sarcastic comments as I would buy £500.00 worth of shares. On more than one occasion, if one of his big clients would call, he would put the phone down and deal with them rather than me. I would overhear the conversation and the talk of thousands here and thousands there; it was like he wanted to humiliate me. Then, a few days later, a share certificate would arrive at home. Things are certainly different now when we buy without the middleman.

FLIP MAGAZINE

The Facebook Group
FACEBOOK GROUP

I started this Facebook group, and people began to ask me questions and follow me; I was buying all the small pharma stocks that did research and medical trials, and it paid off big time. They doubled, tripled and even rose to 20 times the original value. Jumping on the covid19 research bandwagon was the main reason for this phenomenon. So many people who bought the shares I purchased made a lot of money and couldn’t thank me enough as the group grew and grew.

Cryptocurrency

How did you evolve into Cryptocurrency?

What happened was quite funny; more and more discussions were taking place in the group about Bitcoin and cryptos. Still, some people didn’t like it, causing many arguments and conflicts and even people wanting to meet for a punch up. It was crazy and difficult to moderate a group like that, I could see Facebook deleting the group for bullying and swearing, so I decided to start a new group just for crypto.

The Crypto Group

The Crypto group was an instant success, and I had the idea to start our own Cryptocurrency that would be a decentralised cryptocurrency run by the community. The idea became a project, and the project became a movement. So now here we are with two Facebook groups dedicated to BUZABA, one community group with 240 thousand members. Then we have another smaller one, the members group of over 800 people who are the founding members of BUZABA, and everyone is counting the days they can buy BUZABA on the exchange.

It’s funny because there are so many of the coins out there that you can already buy; when you go to their Facebook pages, they only have 150 members, we have 240 thousand in our Facebook group with over 800 founding members, and we don’t have a coin yet.

Also, we have a lot of Americans on board, and they are vital because they take things to the next level. The Americans make it happen; we dream it, but they make it happen, and that’s why I love America.

Origins

Did it all start on Facebook?

Yes, we met on Facebook; BUZABA was born on Facebook. We now have a website www.BUZABA.com and a considerable following. We are a formidable force, and I can say there are some very good and genuine people in this movement.

I wanted BUZABA to give to charity because I believe we can make this a better world for those who have nothing when others have so much. I’m lucky I found people who have the same feelings about charity and good causes. So I made it clear that giving to charity is the pillar, the backbone of BUZABA. Everyone will be able to buy at 0.000000001 and see their coin go up in value, but the charity will benefit as well. It’s all out of my hands now, I work on the website and the whitepaper and keep an eye on the Facebook groups, and the project managers do their thing. BUZABA is the real people’s crypto because of the seven wallets crypto vaults for charity.

WEBSITE

The Seven Wallets

What are the seven wallets?

The seven wallets crypto vaults are the backbone of BUZABA and are very important to the community. They are the whole principle, the ethos of BUZABA and the backbone of BUZABA. As I mentioned, we have great people who want BUZABA to help those who need it most in this world. To best explain the seven wallets crypto vaults, I will quote from our website.

A black image with the name of this article; Buzaba in yellow text.
The 7 Wallets

The 7 Wallets crypto vaults and coin allocation for Charity is based on understanding the cold wallet concept. The most concise description of a cold wallet is a wallet that is not connected to the internet and therefore stands a far lesser risk of being compromised. These wallets can also be referred to as offline wallets or hardware wallets.

According to media reports, a new on-chain analysis from Whale Alert says Bitcoin’s anonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto mined an estimated 1,125,150 Bitcoins. The first price increase occurred in 2010 when the value of a single Bitcoin jumped from around $0.0008 to $0.08. At today’s Bitcoin price, the cold wallet with over one million Bitcoins is expected to be worth a mind-boggling amount of billions USD.

Cold wallet principle

Borrowing on Satoshi Nakamoto’s cold wallet principle, the founding members discussed the creation of 7 cold wallets holding BUZABA coins that will go up in value as investors buy BUZABA on the exchanges, and those coins will be solely allocated for charities with the founding fathers intent on agreeing how many BUZABA coins should be distributed to each wallet.

Each wallet will be assigned a Guardian whose purpose will be to set the tone and direction of the wallet. All seven wallets focus on crypto vaults dedicated to charity and good causes. These will be held in an independent trust with the passwords being held in another trust; that way, two separate entities and no transfer will do any drops or transfers can be made unless there’s an agreement on how much will be transferred and to whom by both independent trusts.

Charity

Why is a charity so important to you?

Well, because I know how it feels to be hungry, I know how it feels to go to bed on an empty stomach, and I know how it feels to have nothing but the clothes on your body when you have to run away from the country you were born in. I was born in Mozambique, an ex Portuguese colony just like the colonies the British had similar to Kenya and so on throughout the world.

A better world

When I was four, my parents had to abandon everything and leave Mozambique because my father was part of the military regime, in this case, the Portuguese army in the country. As the forces were fighting for independence, the army had to get out. Because my father was an officer and part of the secret police, my parents had to run when the freedom fighters were at the gate.

So I’ve seen things that you wouldn’t believe even if I had a witness here with me. But anyway, this is not for now. My point is that charity is significant to me, and I’m so lucky we have many members who believe we can give to the needy and make this a better world. More than a charity, BUZABA is about people power and making this a better world. There are people from all walks of life in our BUZABA community, from accountants, nurses, homemakers, retired judges, builders… it’s a real people’s coin.

Time

How long does it take to do a cryptocurrency?

It can take weeks to a few hours; it depends on what you want and the technology behind the coin. Crypto with its own blockchain and a dedicated app takes longer to make than one of these meme coins with dogs and bunnies that you see everywhere.

Voting

We have a problem because we have a large community, everything has to be discussed and voted on, so it takes longer to agree. Still, we all agree on one thing. We want to be on an extensive exchange like Coinbase, a NASDAQ listed company with an excellent reputation. We also have a lot of Americans, and they want to be able to buy BUZABA easily.

Unfortunately, setting up the infrastructure to launch a currency is time-consuming; I participate in several Whatsapp groups, so we try not to bring the discussion and disagreements into the Facebook arena and the open air. However, we are almost ready, and it’s all a question of getting BUZABA on the exchange now.

Preference

What do you say to the people who didn’t like cryptos in your first stocks and shares Facebook group?

I say nothing; I also say nothing to friends and family and people at work. I know this might sound strange to you, but there is no point in telling them anything because they wouldn’t understand the concept of Bitcoin and cryptos.

They don’t know what a blockchain or an ECR2 token are. They don’t know what a digital wallet or a cold wallet are, POS Proof of Stake or POW Proof of Work, a centralised exchange or decentralised exchange, or rug pulls and whales in crypto.

There’s just no point in talking to them because the first thing they will say is; it’s a scam, “it’s all a scam”. So unless someone knows the basics and bothers to look up the jargon, there’s no point engaging in conversation.

A jargon-free website

That is why I created a jargon-free website, and a different website to all the dark, jargon-filled crypto sites out there www.BUZABA.com is clear, crisp, packed with pictures and all about the people, not about how rich or how quick you can become a millionaire.

Yes, of course, I want people to buy BUZABA and make money in the process, but I also want many people who have nothing to benefit from what we are doing.

The Future

How do you see Cryptocurrency and Bitcoin in the near future?

In my humble opinion, and I’m just a small businessman with a tiny business in Covent Garden whose business still hasn’t recovered from the Pandemic, in the future, we will only have a few cryptocurrencies from the 10,000 out there at the moment. When I say a few, I mean a handful. A lot of cryptos and tokens will simply disappear and be forgotten.

Many people have already lost their money in what we call in the crypto world; rug pulls, they still have the coins they bought at a loss, but the founders already sold and are long gone. As for Bitcoin, in my opinion, Bitcoin won’t go to the levels some people say it will, simply because as people learn more about the crypto world, they will understand the negative impact Bitcoin has on the environment.

Explaining Bitcoin

Bitcoin is like a car from the ’40s and ’50s they are heavy and consume a lot of petrol, and the new cryptos coming up now are like the cars of today; they are faster, more economical, and the electric vehicles are even better. So, bitcoin is like an old car, it takes you from A to B, but it drinks a hell of a lot while the new cryptos are 100 times faster, make 200 transactions per second, and use hardly any energy.

Because of that people will go for the new. I compare cryptos to the beginning of home internet in the mid-’90s; the internet was the same price as a phone call. It was slow and crashed all the time; people said the computer was just an expensive toy that would fade away.

People also said they would never buy online, and newspapers advised never to pay online, or you would lose all your money; I also remember people saying that Facebook would die, I see a lot of similarities with cryptos, just like a lot of the early websites that went bust, many cryptos have already died, but the genuine ones such as BUZABA, will stay forever and change this world for a better one.

*The Networking magazine does not independently endorse the use of Cryptocurrencies. You should apply due diligence and research with all financial investments as your money is at risk. Investments can produce losses and returns, and that should be noted. How you can get the mental health support you need as we emerge from the pandemic and go back to the new “normal”.

Digital Dialogue, discover new ways in which you can alter your lifestyle and make time for what matters to you.

Health

We’ve come a long way since 2020 in the continuous struggle to get through the COVID-19 pandemic. To this day, we still continue the fight to overcome it and get our lives back on track. However, there is still another battle lurking in the background that some of us have yet to come to terms with – the battle of our minds.

Anxiety and depression

Mental health issues have been ever-present in the world and have continued to plague people over the years. In the past, it may have been referred to as simply “having a bad day” or “feeling under the weather”, but today there are names such as “anxiety” and “depression” that can be placed upon those bad feelings. With the rise of mental health awareness in recent years, the stigma towards mental health has gradually decreased and it has become more socially acceptable to talk openly about your feelings without feeling ashamed or being labelled by others.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), approximately one in five (21%) adults over the age of 16 in the UK experienced some form of depression in early 2021 – more than double the amount before the pandemic (10%).

Help

During the pandemic, a time when seeking help was and still is more vital than ever, some of us may have felt isolated and unable to reach out, especially as many face-to-face consultations were put on-hold. However, it’s important to be aware of the other available ways to access the relevant support you need digitally. For example, in the UK, the NHS talking therapies service offers appointments via telephone or video call once you’ve successfully accessed the service either by self-referral or through your GP. There are also many other legitimate online mental health services out there which may differ depending on your location.

Problems

We may not realise it at first, but having someone to talk to about our problems can help significantly compared to just bottling up our feelings and trying to move on. Not only can keeping things to ourselves be harmful to our mental health, but it can also affect our physical state and make us more susceptible to illness. Whether you feel afraid of what the future may hold, or you feel like your life is completely out of your control, try talking to someone, either a professional or a friend or family member, and you may potentially be able to find a way out of the seemingly endless cycle. The first step towards letting go of your problems is believing in yourself and taking that leap of faith in the right direction.

Apps

For those of you who are more tech-savvy and would rather seek ways to help yourselves instead of consulting with another party, there are also a wide-range of apps available to download on your smart device. Some of them may be free, while others may require a paid subscription in order to gain access to the full app experience, though you may still be able to use the basic features without spending if that’s something you’re concerned about. A classic example of this is Headspace, an app that includes various techniques that are focused on mindfulness and meditation in order to reduce stress and anxiety. Apps like these are highly beneficial if you have difficulty relaxing and getting your thoughts and feelings under control. They can help you to focus on your breathing patterns and slow down when you feel the rush and stress of daily life kicking in. They can also make you more aware of your body and the way it functions using the body-scanning technique, allowing you to notice each sensation and release any muscle tension within. Just a few minutes of mindfulness a day can help you stay focused on what’s important and develop a greater sense of self-awareness.

There are innumerable ways in which you can improve your overall mental health and lifestyle. Here are a few ideas that you may consider implementing to help you overcome any mental blocks or negative emotions you may be dealing with:

A photo of the article title.

Digital detox

Between work, education and socialising, our lives can get pretty chaotic online, especially since working from home has become more common in today’s world. The constant overload of emails, video calls and social media notifications can be overwhelming and unavoidable at times, but there’s no harm in taking a break once in a while when you have the time to spare. For example, on a weekend when you have no commitments to attend to, consider putting your phone and other devices away for a while and do something positive for yourself. Get some fresh air, tidy your living space, read a new book, anything that doesn’t require wi-fi. Who knows, maybe you’ll enjoy it and consider trying it again sometime.

Live

Contrary to taking a digital break, perhaps the opposite may benefit you instead. Having a conversation with a familiar face may be just what you need to ground yourself and gain some perspective. You don’t necessarily have to dump all of your emotions on them if you’d prefer not to, but having a chat with someone you trust can take your mind off things for a while and allow you to notice the greater things in life. As human beings we thrive on forming connections with other people, so communication is necessary from time to time, regardless of your personality type and how sociable you are.

Exercise

Exercise has always been a highly recommended way to deal with both physical and mental health problems. As lockdown restrictions have eased up, many gyms and sports facilities are now open for business and ready to take on new members. However, for those of you who may not have the time or money to invest in a long-term membership, you may consider alternative methods that are cost-free, such as going for a walk or run, or using outdoor equipment in local parks. There are also many home workout videos out there that can give you a full-body workout by simply using your own body as a weight to shed those pounds.

Diet

Along with exercise, diet is another important factor that will allow you to experience the full effect of healthier living. When we feel stressed or overwhelmed, many of us habitually turn to food and drink that is high in sugar and calories as it is comforting. However, sugary foods can amplify our negative emotions and worsen them in the long-term if we don’t limit our intake of them. It’s okay to allow yourself a treat every now and then, to avoid developing a toxic relationship with food, but remember to consider healthy alternatives as well. There’s no need to deprive yourself from the things you enjoy eating, but try eating them in moderation to prevent further health issues. There are plenty of healthy but tasty recipes available online, as well as various health apps that can help you take control of your stress-eating habits.

Knowledge is power

We live in an age where knowledge is power, which means it’s just as important to be aware of mental health problems and what to expect when dealing with them. When browsing online about health conditions, remember to always make sure that you’re looking at reliable sources, such as the NHS website if you live in the UK. There’s plenty of fake news and inaccurate information out there that can mislead you and make you think the worst. If you think you may have a mental health condition, please consider seeking professional help instead of fully depending on self-diagnosis and treatment. While the above methods can benefit you in some way, they may only help deal with the surface of the problem. Be sure to make the right choice for you and your health.

Digital

In this digital era, the future of mental health seems hopeful as things gradually transition online, making services and information more accessible to people regardless of their location or social status. By raising awareness and supporting those who are battling with their own mental health, we can change the way people view such conditions and breakdown stereotypes and labels. It may be something that you have to live with, but it doesn’t define who you are or your worth as an individual. You are more than what goes on in your head.

A space for creativity and passion, discussing topics that are relevant in modern society to potentially inspire others and reshape their thinking. Reading can make a difference towards finding a work life balance.

This is an image of a book because this article is about reading and finding a good work life balance.

Looking for something different that could potentially entertain AND enlighten you? Here’s a breakdown of why reading is a great way to spend your free time in a world that’s constantly buzzing (literally and digitally).

Level of boredom

Picture this – you’re sitting down idly scrolling through your phone, tired of all the oddly relatable memes, viral videos, and picture-perfect posts on social media. No other apps, games, shows or movies can satisfy your level of boredom because everything feels so repetitive and mundane. You need a change of scenery to focus your mind elsewhere, but where to look?

How about… a book?

Reading Words

Some of you may be thinking: How is a book going to cure my boredom? Reading so many words is exhausting… I’ll probably get bored again eventually… I couldn’t even finish the last book I read, why bother trying again?

Perhaps you’re just reading the wrong books.

There’s an endless world of books out there, with an abundance of genres, themes, plots, characters and more. There are also multiple platforms and formats available, whether you prefer reading physical books, i.e. paperbacks and hardbacks, or e-books on your smart device.

A photo of many birds flying to depict that reading is freedom. A new chapter, how reading can enhance your life.

Work life balance

Life gets busy at times with work, education, and simply just trying to get through each day, especially with the current pandemic still lingering in the background as society gradually transitions to the new “normal”. We don’t always have the time to fully relax and indulge in what little freedom we have. As readers, we may sometimes feel that getting lost in a good book is an unproductive use of time; however, we can turn that mindset around by seeing it as an opportunity to educate and entertain ourselves. What may initially seem like a chore could potentially turn out to be a fun and engaging experience.

Through reading and momentarily immersing ourselves in another world, we can not only learn more about the topics we choose to focus on, but we can also learn more about who we are as individuals as we find characters and little snippets of information that we can relate to. We may also find helpful tips and advice that we can implement in our own lives to change the way we behave, how we view the world, or to enhance our knowledge and skills. Wherever your interests lie, there is bound to be a book that you will enjoy that may lead you on a journey of self-discovery.

Judging a book by its cover

We’re often told not to judge a book by its cover, yet due to human nature we sometimes can’t help the way our critical minds work. However, if we look past the surface, we may find that what lies beneath tells an entirely different story. There are many ways in which books can impact our lives, it just takes a minimal amount of effort to begin. So go on, stop mindlessly tapping away at your screen, find a suitable book and get reading.

We want to write about you!

A conversation with Graham Wheatcroft, the resilience trainer who is reaching new heights.

An interview with Graham Wheatcroft.

We all seek balance in our lives; I think in most cases, that goes without saying. It seems more relevant today than it ever has been. One such image often associated with Yoga and meditation, and mental health is the Yin and Yang symbol. Its curious and appealing design reflects the harmony between work, rest and play.

Yin & Yang

I was fortunate to meet Graham Wheatcroft on a business networking group. Both professionally and personally, he promotes everything that the word; resilience stands for, oozing with energy and a legendary work ethic that most of us strive to achieve.

It’s been such a challenging year for people, spending long periods at home, unable to find a rhythm of life that once served us all so well, with Freedom being the operative word.

Struggling to overcome a relationship breakdown, he faced untold anxiety issues that were self-destructive. His reference to a dark place and a low point in his life resonate with people who have experienced a similar scenario.

Determined to break free from a downward spiral, a glance at a parked dumbbell would change his life forever. A curious mind combined with a fighting spirit would see him challenge himself to 100 curls. The driving force behind this was purely to see how he would feel, unknown to him; it would see him catapulted into a successful career helping people stay away from dark places and finding a life balance.

Why should people contact you?

My background was in Personal training for an iconic hotel chain. I know first hand that the public is coaxed into spending countless hours lifting weights to get results.

I promote the use of simple tools such as body weight, dumbbells or even tins of beans to train and time-efficient training sessions. And I put so many other factors into the mix as I believe that meditation, breathing, and focus have a significant part in obtaining an overall feeling of accomplishment.

It’s this unique blend of elements that create a very different ambience and experience for my classes.

Do you have a physical studio?

The simple answer is; no, I don’t. I use a virtual platform called Remote Coach; it gave me an extensive reach, much more than a physical presence could ever offer. The term; “pocket personal trainer or pocket PT is a natural evolution for my industry”.

As I promote a fusion between a traditional PT model and combine it with breathing techniques, meditation, exercise and mind conditioning, I like to think that I bring something new and dynamic to the table.

The majority of my clients feel that there are real benefits to a virtual presence; my reach now includes the USA. I want to turn my attention towards corporate training as more and more people are currently working within a home environment.

Focus

I have many interests, and being a family man; I love spending time with my children. Aged 7 and 20 months, they keep me in check and give me a higher purpose.

What symbol would you use to describe your business?

That’s a great question; I think a rocket would be the answer, forging forward at speed, moving in an upward direction. I feel that my journey can benefit people who have experienced anxiety.

What types of services do you offer?

I love treating everyone with a bespoke approach, tailored to their individual needs. However for clients who need more defined parameters; I offer choice.

I offer a twelve-week package with all area access. There will be a link to my Facebook page on this article for information, and you can always contact me on messenger. I strive to offer a non-negotiable high standard and at a competitive price.

The future

In a world filled with uncertainty where there are constant challenges to overcome and the aptly named life balance is disturbed, it’s comforting to know that someone like Graham has the experience to offer guidance. Solitude and resolve for anyone who is feeling anxiety and wants a path back towards restoring that equilibrium between the mind, body and soul.

Gloves Off

Everybody has a story but this is one story that I feel honoured to tell. Who would have thought that a chubby little kid from Alphabet City in New York would have enough courage and determination in his soul to persist until he achieved his goal of becoming a professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter and esteemed personal trainer (PT) to a celebrity and high profile client base in London?

I hereby present to you – Richard. J. Edwards (Richie) aka N.Y. Shogun. With a professional name that derives from the legendary de facto rulers of ancient Japan, Richie has demonstrated undeniable fervour in his journey, literally personifying his associated tagline #hustle.

Grinning from ear to ear, I am instantaneously focused on Richie and his incredibly infectious laugh and warm persona. We talk for what feels like an eternity and I am so drawn in to Richie’s tales of his struggle, determination and gratitude and genuinely excited to share my account of these with you.

Early Inspiration

Growing up in the 80’s, sharing a neighbourhood with Madonna and Keith Haring, at a time when hip hop, basketball and boxing were all the rage, was no mean feat for little nerdy Richie – who had no natural skills in any of these arenas (his words, not mine!).

It was dangerous; nestled between China Town, Spanish Harlem and Seaport, during a period where drugs and general crime were rife, you can understand why Richie was sheltered by his parents and prevented from walking the streets unchaperoned. He never played sports, wasn’t particularly cool and tended to be quite solo in his endeavours.

So, how was he inspired?

Funnily enough, breaking his wrist a day before commencing school, resulted in an overnight stay at the hospital where he met his first best friend, who sported a black belt in karate – JC. Renowned for being the toughest kid in town, Richie was mesmerised by the fluidity of his kicks and swift movements and pleasantly surprised at how patient, caring and loving he was. Sadly, JC had an asthma attack and passed away a few months on; however, meeting him was instrumental to the start of Richie’s journey.

The Dojo Brothers and the whole Metro All Stars karate team (run by Hector Santiago, whose daughter attended the same school as Richie) were present at the funeral, so an acquaintance was formed. For those of you, like me, who are not familiar with this scene; remember the Ninja Turtle movies – well, these are the guys beneath the suits in the first movie way back when!

So, JC’s legacy lives on…Richie went on to join White Tiger Dojo, which he describes with a glint in his eye was like ‘training with superheroes’, as he never felt he was the fastest or strongest contender.

A young kid, with a lot of heart and passion, he went on to take hits in the hope that one day his dreams would come in to fruition.

The karate school eventually shut down, Richie’s dad was sadly diagnosed with cancer, and that was when he stumbled across the boxing room. There was nothing glorious about this journey, about getting your ‘ass whooped’ in sparring sessions by some of the best boxers in the NYC amateur scene. But, persist he did.

It was a long path to reach the point where he progressed from boxing to fighting professional MMA.

Richie was at Printing House for a couple of years, training how to box. This was when he met Sebastian Taylor – body builder and a brown belt in Brazilian jujitsu, who presented him with the fighting scene in Japan. Having someone believe in him was a powerful motivation and watching endless videos of these fights was imperative, with training opportunities sparse, as no gyms would promote the MMA industry (it was still perceived as taboo and considered to be ‘like human cock fighting’).

Only 24 years old, with no experience, Richie plucked up the courage to trek to Boston for a UFC try out show, competing with 500 fighters. Another knockdown – a torn MCL (medial collateral ligament) injury from round one didn’t deter him. Funnelling through the pain, knee supported by duct tape, Richie hid his mishap and continued to compete. He didn’t get through but the devastation just fuelled more determination.

I am inspired. I have never met someone with so much fight and passion – the resilience to keep going and never give up.

Fighting took over and became his obsession and it was at this point he decided to go professional, packed his bags and moved to Boston where he trained for a couple of years with the elite.

A lot of introductions later and the connection with J Silver was formed. Richie chuckles memorably as he tells me how he was made to complete a 5 mile run then went to the gym for a sparring session. Bearing in mind he was a feather weight and J Silver was a heavy weight, he was lured in to a 10 round cage fight and, with burning lungs and laboured breath, he refused to be defeated. Finally, a breakthrough; poached by the Gold Team fighters, he stayed there for 3 years.

From NYC to London

So, how did Richie end up here – in sunny London? Like all great stories, it started with a woman. With what was meant to be a two week trip 11 years ago, funded by the air miles of doting colleagues, Richie landed in The Big Smoke and never looked back.

He trained with Team Titan, now known as GB Top team, and still does to this day. From falling in love and uprooting his life to moving half way across the world, Richie ran classes at The Fight Factory in Purley and competed and won Essex cage fighting championships.

The past year has been difficult for everyone and MMA fighting has also ground to a halt. With the last tough fight against an opponent that was 20kg heavier than him, despite his age, Richie is keen to get back in the cage.

Having always been a PT parallel to training and fighting, Richie has run classes at gyms and also privately. Holding pads for some of the best fighters in the country most definitely paid off, as it affords him the tenacity to be able to offer 30 minute non-stop sparring sessions!

Inspired by the highest ranking warriors in the Japanese army, Richie lives by the Shogun code of conduct, morals and willingness to die for what you believe in. His overpowering mentality, where giving up has never been an option, is gripping. The years of struggle and hard work led up to now, and he beams with such positive energy and appreciation, which is so admirable.

The Next Stage

Like myself, you are probably wondering what Richie’s next goal is. With the intent of reuniting the community by showing strength, he has plans for Pop up Events (exercise classes) later this year. In tow with a fitness podcast with James Arthur, which is currently under discussion, there is a lot of excitement ahead!

If you enjoyed reading about Richie’s journey, be sure to stay connected by following him @n.y.shogun on Instagram and visit https://newyorkshogun.com/ for any PT enquiries.

If podcasts are more your thing, watch this space for my follow up interview and training tips session with Richie, which is coming very soon!

N.Y. Shogun’s Top Health & Fitness Tips

1. Ask yourself – what do I want? Forget social media and family/friend influences and focus on what YOU are trying to achieve.

2. Once you’ve figured this out, make a plan! Consult a PT, get some direction; you may just need a programme or plan to follow and not a PT.

3. What makes you happy? Find workouts that are actually a bit tough and challenging but also excite you. Going through the motions and then feeling demotivated afterwards is just a waste of time and energy.

4. Sleep well.

5. Eat well – portion control, meal prep and be aware of your consumption

6. Be mindful. Meditate, find ways to relax and switch off

7. Refrain from the usage of steroids, diet supplements or engaging in crash diets. Be conscious to make a lifestyle change that is healthy but also makes you feel good

28 Day Boxing Challenge

For Richie, this lockdown felt the hardest. With no end in sight and the post-Christmas slump looming, he made the decision to create content and share a 28 Day Boxing Challenge on Instagram for the month of February.

With feedback from clients, friends and followers insinuating that they were fed up of regular body workouts comprising of burpees and the likes, he felt that boxing would be teaching a different skill set whilst also being a great release for those that engaged.

Breaking down the fundamentals of boxing that he teaches in private training sessions, the collection of free short reels posted during the month were a massive hit. Filmed by talented friend Mehrad Keroyan (Instagram @mehrad_k01), they were ecstatic at the response. Even though Richie only has 1,400 followers on Instagram, one of the videos received a whopping 49,000 views.

In conjunction with this, long term client, X Factor winning singer and songwriter James Arthur, engaged with Richie where they went head to head remotely competing with calorie burning workouts. It is evident that Richie’s ethos ‘I never see what people do, I see them for who they are’ is paramount in his approach to socially connecting to provide motivation during this testing time.

Let’s get personal…random things I really wanted to know!

1. If you could have a cheat day where you eat absolutely anything you want all day, what would you have?

Sweeties & chocolates!! We are laughing raucously as Richie and I discuss how ‘your grandmother was your first drug dealer’. For the nostalgia and endorphins, particularly as he expresses that he is still a fat kid at heart, marshmallows and banana foam would rule the day.

2. If you could get in a time machine and give a piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?

He wishes that he had more knowledge about the structure of fitness. Finding it years later, and now almost 40, losing a lot of family members due to illnesses fuelled by being unhealthy saddens him. ‘No one taught them about diet and the importance it. If I could go back and do this, a lot of the people close to my heart would still be here today’.

3. If you could have a studio anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

No way! There is me expecting something flamboyant like a beachfront or yacht but Richie would stay right here – in Fulham, Chelsea – for the people, and simply because ‘London is home’. The only other place would be NYC; back to the lower East Side. With the strong belief that you are a product of your environment, he hasn’t forgotten where he came from and would love to give back to the community that inspired him to be who he is today.

Magical Stones

By Sanj Saigal

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who couldn’t sleep. Night after night, she would ask her father to read a story to her, but nothing measured up to her expectations.

Then one day, she asked her father to invent a story to be in it. His blurry eyes and his desire to sleep forced a story created at speed and would cater to her wishes.

The story told a tale of a little girl who discovered a magical pink stone. Held when it was bedtime, it would place her into a parallel world where everything would seem real.

It worked, and the father would finally be able to sleep, something he had craved for so long. One day he heard his daughter crying in the early hours of the morning; he ran to his daughter’s bedroom to find her holding the pink stone in her hand and sobbing. He asked her what was wrong, only to be told that she felt alone in her dream and wanted her friends to be in the parallel world with her.

The father scratched his head and then told her that if her friends held that same magical pink stones, they would all be in the same dream together.

The father feeling quite proud of himself managed to stop his daughter from crying with his magical pink stones story. A few months later, the little girls’ mother told the father to write the story on paper so she could read it to the little girl.

Months had passed, and whilst dropping off his daughter at school, he was met by some of the little girl’s friends, who all produced a pink stone in their hands one by one. And so, Dreamstones the novel was born and would be sold in every book store. The little girl held the copy of the book as she smiled at her father. That father was me, and that little girl was, in fact, my daughter; suffice to say, there was a very happy ending.

There is a moral to this story; creativity is sometimes forced upon us. You may struggle to find it throughout your life, but it lives within you.

The stadium concept; promoting children’s wellbeing.

Philip Murphy has been a PGA pro since 1982. Lynne Sweeney qualified in 1996 as the Titleist Trainee of the year for GB and Ireland. The Murphy Sweeney golf school was formed in 1996 when Philip and Lynne teamed up. The Irish Ladies Golf Union employed MSGS as National Junior coaches from 1996 to 1999. Since 2008 MSGS is based in Midlands Ireland teaching at five clubs. We teach people of all ages, but Our passion is with Junior Golf, and we have had great success with Juniors in all of these clubs.

The Stadium Concept

We discovered the Stadium Concept Online. I spotted a few YouTube videos and liked what we saw immediately.  The Stadium Concept philosophy is something we have always believed in; Make Golf Fun, make Learning Fun, especially for kids. We have always included games and fun and energy in our classes and camps. Still, The Stadium Concept fuses it in a package that is complete, professional and based on scientific research.

We have been using it for two months now at Mount Temple Golf Club in Co. Westmeath. It’s been an enormous success. We love using it. Kids and parents love it too. It has so much potential. Our plan is to get adults utilising this system for Winter training. Also, we want to start doing corporate days using; “the Stadium Concept”.

It takes a little bit of getting used to, but we find it fantastic now. We have all our student profiles, levels, testing, training etc. at the push of a button. Training sessions are so easy to set up and customise. We have hundreds of exercises to choose from and videos to show pupils. We can time kids on the track and get rankings easily. It’s really cool and fun to use.

We are excited to be part of the Stadium Family. We can’t wait to see it grow all over the world.

“Make Golf fun, make learning fun, especially for kids”.

A bean-to-bar craft chocolate maker, producing luxury dark chocolate without any additives. By sourcing directly from local producers, we use only high-quality, single-origin cacao to produce our unique chocolates.

When you think of chocolate, we often lean towards a stereotype that originates from TV commercials, occasionally pushing cheap pricing points to a broader audience, only a few brands escaping that net. Luxury in this sector is experiencing exponential growth more so with the run-up to Christmas.

Luxury dark chocolate without any additives.

Chocolate producers uk

Survival for me would be impossible without its; captivating smell and addictive taste, not a connoisseur by any means but the mere thought of survival without chocolate is not worth thinking about.

I was lucky enough to catch up with Daniel Jackman, the exclusive UK distributor for Definite Chocolate. After living in the Dominican Republic for several years, he met the founder of the company and became a personal friend. The entrepreneurial side of Daniel made him identify with an opportunity to bring a unique product to market here in the UK.

At this point, a history lesson comes into play which is very significant to the distribution process and why it separates this particular chocolate from the mainstream market.

“Cacao was first introduced to the island of Hispaniola (the current Dominican Republic and Haiti) by the Spanish at the beginning of the 17th century, mostly as an experiment. In the lee of Pico Duarte, a now dormant volcano and the tallest mountain in the Caribbean, the cacao tree thrives on the rich soil found on this island. It’s from here that we source our cacao”.

Feed your imagination

Much like fine wine, the unique flavours of our single-origin bars take time to develop. Let the chocolate melt on your tongue, enjoying the taste as it grows. Savour the subtle tasting notes you’ll find in no other chocolate. This is Definite Chocolate.

Quality

You could sense the excitement in Daniel’s voice tones when he explained that his company is; internationally recognised for quality. I was left intrigued to know more about the beans to bar process which plays such a big part in defining why this product should appeal to both wholesalers and retailers. Our Cocao is ethically sourced, working closely with farms to ensure that our manufacturing process is continually improved.

Our award-winning chocolate is sourced from only a handful of estates in the Dominican Republic and is carefully crafted through our micro-batch operation. The result is fine dark chocolate with rich and complex tasting notes.

By ensuring each bar only uses Cacao from a single estate, we maximise the tastes and tones of our chocolate. These unique flavours are what make our chocolate so distinctive.

Why the UK?

The UK has been recognised for their love of chocolate but more so with dark chocolate. Dark chocolate has been known to have some health benefits such as not containing any additives, maintaining concentration levels, contributing to improved blood pressure levels and it’s also vegan-friendly which is a growing trend.

He couldn’t see me smiling but having a passion for chocolate and for having diet cheat days; this would only lead me to make me want his product more.

I should mention that Daniel is currently looking for both wholesalers and retailers, his details are on this article. The website is very comprehensive and I have included a website screen video capture with a link, very user friendly it provides a great insight into the humble beginnings for this quality luxury brand. Daniel is working remotely, an added benefit at this time so please contact him as I feel that there is a place in the market for a high-end chocolate brand like this.

The Future

Three new fabulous products are being launched here in the UK in time for Christmas, with the intention of a hot chocolate complement to the range soon. You can follow the Definite chocolate story on both Facebook and Instagram, press their logos on this page to join.

“We are proud to have been recognised internationally for the quality of our chocolates. We’re delighted that others love our products just as much as we do!”
